Red Line Station Area Advisory Committees to Be Announced!

As a part of the Maryland Transit Administration's commitment to the Baltimore City Red Line Community Compact, a nationally recognized model in community engagement, we would like to announce the establishment of Station Area Advisory Committees (SAACs). One of the core goals of the SAACs is to allow for community stakeholders along the corridor to work collaboratively with designers, architects, land use professionals, and planners to design stations and the area surrounding the stations that will maximize community benefits.

The MTA welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with community stakeholders to design the best possible station for their community. Each of the 20 proposed stations will be assigned to a committee. In some cases, a committee may be responsible for more than one station, but this will depend on the level of interest expressed by the community. To maximize participation and maintain manageable meetings, each committee will have 15 to 20 members.

The SAAC nomination process closed on August 25, 2010. A selection panel of representatives from the Red Line Citizens Advisory Council, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, urban design associations, community interest groups, and the MTA are reviewing all nominations ensuring that each station committee is comprised of volunteers with diverse perspectives and skills. Once the committee members are selected, they will be notified about member orientation.

MTA Announces Improvements to Red Line

Tunnel Enhancements, Other Improvements Included in Request for Federal Funding

The Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) request for funding for the Red Line will include $121 million in key enhancements to the project announced last summer, including a two track tunnel under Cooks Lane in western Baltimore City. The Red Line is a 14.5-mile light rail line that will serve communities between Woodlawn and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and enhance the regional transit network with connections to the Metro Subway, Light Rail and MARC Train. In announcing his selection of the route in 2009, Governor O’Malley recognized the potential for efficient, dependable transportation to provide access to job opportunities for corridor residents.
