Red Line Study Notice: The MTA will conduct geological studies starting December 14, 2009

Now that a preferred alternative has been selected for the MTA Red Line project, the Red Line team needs to conduct general geological studies (geotechnical analysis) along the project corridor to better understand the soil, rock, and groundwater conditions, especially in areas where underground tunneling is proposed. Click here to find out more about the studies, the work areas and schedule.

We will perform two types of geological studies: soil boring and seismic refraction investigation. For soil boring, equipment is used to remove soil samples about 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Seismic refraction is used to obtain information about soil, rock and groundwater without disturbing the surface. The seismic tests are performed by placing sensors on the surface and collecting data as sound waves are bounced back to the sensors.

Both studies will cause minor traffic disruptions, such as parking restrictions and some travel lane closures. Residents and businesses closest to the testing locations have been notified to watch for changing traffic and pedestrian patterns in the area.
