Environmental Impact Statement > Purpose and NeedThe study is part of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) that establishes a national policy of preserving and enhancing the human and natural environments for federally funded actions (including transportation improvement projects). The full range of alternatives are considered and evaluated in the two stages of the NEPA process which include a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). The MTA will prepare a DEIS for both the Red and Green Lines that examines the natural and human environmental resources in the study area and to better understand the impacts of build and no-build alternatives. A public hearing will be held to solicit comments on the DEIS. The DEIS will be available for public review prior to the hearings. Stay tuned to this section of our web site as technical reports are completed as part of the DEIS process
