Red Line Study Notice: Geological Studies Will Continue Into Spring 2010

Now that a preferred alternative has been selected for the MTA Red Line project, the Red Line team has been conducting general underground studies (geotechnical analyses) along the project corridor to better understand the soil, rock, and groundwater conditions, especially in areas where underground tunneling is proposed.

We have been performing two types of geological studies: soil boring and seismic refraction investigation. Both studies cause minor traffic disruptions, such as parking restrictions and some travel lane closures. Residents and businesses closest to the testing locations have been notified to watch for changing traffic and pedestrian patterns in the area. The work will occur anytime between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., depending on the location and date.

Check the updated Phase 2 Spring 2010 schedule below for the remainder of the soil boring tests. Please keep in mind that unforeseen conditions, such as weather and city events, could still delay completion or alter the schedule. Check this page regularly for updates.

COMPLETED — Seismic Refraction Schedule

Testing has been completed on all streets per the original January 2010 schedule.

COMPLETED — Soil Boring Schedule

Soil Boring has been completed on all streeets per the Spring/Summer 2010 schedule.

We will keep you updated on other work that could have community and roadway impacts.

Red Line Study Notice: The MTA will conduct geological studies starting December 14, 2009

Now that a preferred alternative has been selected for the MTA Red Line project, the Red Line team needs to conduct general geological studies (geotechnical analysis) along the project corridor to better understand the soil, rock, and groundwater conditions, especially in areas where underground tunneling is proposed. Click here to find out more about the studies, the work areas and schedule.

We will perform two types of geological studies: soil boring and seismic refraction investigation. For soil boring, equipment is used to remove soil samples about 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Seismic refraction is used to obtain information about soil, rock and groundwater without disturbing the surface. The seismic tests are performed by placing sensors on the surface and collecting data as sound waves are bounced back to the sensors.

Both studies will cause minor traffic disruptions, such as parking restrictions and some travel lane closures. Residents and businesses closest to the testing locations have been notified to watch for changing traffic and pedestrian patterns in the area.
